On May 3, 2014, nine years after high school sweethearts Megan and Sebastian first met as sophomores, the pair headed toward the Kilauea Lighthouse during a trip to Hawaii, where Sebastian surprised Megan with a proposal — and a ring he designed himself. While the pair lives in Florida, they decided to head back to the bride's family home of Port Austin, Michigan, to wed. And with good reason! "My grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great grandparents were all married in Saint Michael Catholic Church in Port Austin, and I knew I wanted to do the same," says Megan.
The pair combined their DIY skills with a group of amazing Michigan vendors, including Reinhardt Blooms("Our wedding date was based around their availability!" reveals the bride) and The Farm Restaurant, to create a vintage farm-chic celebration that made the most of the location and the late June bounty. The vibrant blooms popped against Sebastian's blue three-piece suit.
The red-studded bouquets were a perfect match for Megan's maid of honor's floral-print ASOS gown, which was the inspiration for the day's color scheme. "We were excited to find gowns that were a little less traditional — and less expensive!" Megan says.
The groomsmen wore their own dark blue suits to complement Sebastian's, and all wore matching ties and succulent boutonnieres.
"Planning a wedding from out of state isn't easy," says Megan, "which is why we decided early on to source all of our vendors from Michigan — and to surround ourselves with the best we could find! — to help it all run smoothly."
To add to the family history of the day, Megan and Sebastian rode to the church in the bride's grandfather's 1922 Model T, driven by her father.
The reception took place on the lawn at the Farm Restaurant, where vintage furniture and café lights set the scene. Tables were topped with oyster linens and low arrangements of loose garden roses and greenery. Pink mismatched glassware lent an eclectic feel to the tablescape.
Megan turned to Rusted Rose Vintage Rentals to compile 160 unique place settings, each with a differentvintage china pattern for the dinner plate, charger, and bread plate.
Guests were served family-style roasted chicken, stuffed prime rib, and vegetable strudel before Megan and Sebastian cut into a naked vanilla cake decorated with fresh strawberries and blueberries.
For a special take on a first dance, Megan's maid of honor and her cousin sang an acoustic version of John Mayer's "XO."
While the couple took on a few projects of their own, Megan advises brides and grooms to know when enough is enough. "Keep your DIYs to a minimum, because what's worse than a poorly executed project on your wedding day? Instead, hire the best professionals you can — there's a reason they do weddings for a living!"
